Geographically, North Dakota is the center of North America. North Dakota is the 6th largest energy exporting state. North Dakota exports 60% of the energy produced in the state, and produces electricity at a cost of 3.5 to 6 cents per kilowatt hour. North Dakota's energy comes from coal, oil, hydro-electric and wind energy.
Casselton is located in the agriculturally rich Red River Valley of the North. The Red River valley is a 40-50 mile wide by 300 mile long area carved out about 20,000 years ago by Laurentide ice sheet that melted leaving Lake Agassiz. During the 4000 years of Lake Agassiz existence, the deposited silt on the lake floor left some of the richest soil on earth.
In the early days, Casselton was located at the junction of the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railroads. Later, US Highway 10 and ND Highway 18 intersected at Casselton. Today, Highway 10 is known as Interstate 94, and connects the northern US East and West Coasts. Interstate 29, the major Canada to Mexico route, is also located 18 miles from Casselton. Fiber optic cables, the roads of the future, also criss-cross through Casselton.
