Mike Carroll, Carroll Collection of US Eagle Rings, appearing in Pioneer Press Newspapers - Publishers of 53 weekly newspapers in the north suburbs of Chicago, IL.
Mike Carroll doesn't seem like a jewelry-designer kind of guy – he drives tractors, trucks, Harleys and airplanes and designed his first ring in the cockpit at 24,000 feet. And when it comes to eagle rings, he is regarded as one of the world's most progressive talents. A commercial pilot for over 30 years, Carroll is passionate about aviation, eagles and his country. He came up with the idea to create rings with an eagle motif about a dozen years ago during a flight between Chicago and a small town in Florida. “I used to fly the Chicago/Florida route on a regular basis,” he said. “As most pilots would agree, long flights are really ‘hours of boredom punctuated by moments of terror'. I sketched my first design during one of those flights – the boring part.”
Many of his designs were inspired from the eagles found on bank buildings, post offices, old coins and badges. The rings commemorate periods, icons and organizations of the United States. “I've always been interested in symbols of the United States. I started to frequent antique stores looking for images of eagles from old currency military buttons, clocks, whatever,” he said. “I picked up an old police badge in Florida from the turn of the 19th century that appealed to me.” He named the ring “Liberty” featuring an eagle similar to the one depicted on that badge. All 28 of his rings have a name benefiting the image such as ‘ Republic', ‘Mariner' and ‘ Centurion'. Naturally, he has named a ring ‘Senator' in honor of his father, the late Senator John Carroll of Illinois.
