Title
Cape Town Pride
Description
Cape Town's Pride Festival began in 2001 and then merged the following year with another local gay event. After the 2002 festival the decision was made to revert back to its original identity, and as part of the implementation of a long term strategy the 2003 festival was postponed to February 2004 in an effort to attract gay tourism to the festival and the city. The months of February and March are traditionally the period during which Cape Town sees the greatest income from tourism, and this move proved successful with a particularly well-supported festival and Parade in both 2004 and 2005.
Cape Town Gay Pride is governed by a Board of Directors appointed from the Gay and Lesbian community. As is the practice in 2006, it may on occasion employ a Festival Director charged with the daily running of the company within the principles of its constitution. Further working committees are elected to help the Board.
Ian has been involved with Pride since 1996 in many forms, from initially chairing Johannesburg's Pride to being involved in Cape Town Pride since 2001. He has been involved with TOGS (The Organisation of Gay Sports) since 1998 as PRO and is currently co-chair and Togs' representative (delegate director) to the Federation of Gay Games. In this capacity Ian is one of the only two African delegates on this international gay sports body that is the license holder for the Gay Games.
