The Canton Land Conservation Trust (CLCT) was chartered in 1972 as a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to preserving the natural resources of the Town of Canton. Land Trust properties range from Sweetheart Mountain in Collinsville to the Smith Tree Farm in Canton's northwest corner. With the help of many generous and foresighted people, thirty-two pieces of property totaling 1300 plus acres have been preserved, plus several additional easements. This represents more than eight percent of the area of the town. Hiking trails for anyone's use can be found on five properties, and work is being done to create trails on two other properties. Most properties are open to the public for passive recreation and nature appreciation.
These properties are administered by the Trust's Board of Directors, composed of Canton residents and members with an interest in protecting our forest, wetlands and watercourses. Our organization is maintained almost completely by volunteer efforts through our membership. The success of such projects as the Smith Christmas Tree Farm, maintenance of our trail system and preserve stewardship requires a sizeable commitment from our community. Protection of our town's scenic beauty and its unique geological, ecological and historic sites benefits all citizens.
