Teenagers, pampered housecats, and large dogs who howl at every passing train, logging truck, and SUV that pulls into the drive. Of these, the most vicious are no doubt the teenagers. We have a horse, too, but he has an apartment uptown.

For nearly two centuries, Cahoon Farm, located in the Northeast Kingdom of the beautiful state of Vermont, was a indeed a working, thriving farm, raising at various times on its several hundred acres cattle, Morgan horses and assorted crops, including early in its colonial history, potatoes, from which I understand a fairly potent vodka was distilled. However, the farm now consists of eight acres and the large, Georgian-style homestead, built in 1798, an enclave against, shall we say, “progress.”

Every spring, I imagine what should be done with the remaining bit of rolling field behind the house. I have considered raising a handful of sheep, a dairy cow or two, or a few graceful, mystical alpacas. There was talk briefly of water buffalo, but I came to my senses on that. In all likelihood, we’ll eventually plant Christmas trees. The problem with this plan is that I will almost certainly be unable to cut down a tree I’ve watched grow from a seedling. I suspect the place will one day turn into a sort of Christmas tree commune, where conifers of every denomination, variation of green and width of branch can live in peace and harmony . . .
