On Saturday 22nd February 2003, at half time during Reading's match against Rotherham at the Madejski Stadium, the Berks and Bucks County Football Association and Reading Football Club Chairman John Madejski presented FA Charter Standard Club Awards to local clubs Meadway Youth F.C. and Burghfield F.C.
The programme, supported by FA Partner McDonalds, was set up by the FA to encourage clubs to set new standards in coaching, administration, development and child protection practises. In being named Charter Standard clubs Meadway Youth and Burghfield join a select group of football clubs that have met and exceeded the high level of criteria set by The Football Association.
"The FA is committed to raising the standards of grassroots football in England to encourage more people to play, to develop their skills, and to enjoy the game in the right environment. Clubs who become Charter Standard in our county and across the country are taking part in a genuine grassroots revolution."
