Build out 15 city listings for LASIK (Sept. 16-30)

Our Work / Content / Tasks / Build out 15 city listings for LASIK (Sept. 16-30) (Repeat) (ChrisBabson)

Task

Build out listings pages for top 15 cities in the US that we haven't covered yet.

Why?

We need to make a push to further develop the LASIK resource and make it actually useful. The city listings are a cornerstone to this project since no other resource exists to fully compete with us in this area.

Description

The procedure for building these listings pages has changed slightly, but the general operation is the same.

Procedure

1) Use our category information

  • Use category intersect tool to see what we have on the subject
    • Ex: In your edit window type LASIK boston (Take out spaces!)
    • Upon save this will return all articles with both of these category tags (a category intersection)
      • Try again with other possible combinations to tease out all variations: Lasik Boston, LASIK boston (remember that case is important here)

2) Find what we don't have

  • Use top web search sites (Yahoo!, Google, MSN) and listings sites (CitySearch, Yelp, YellowWikis) to find all centers in this area (NOTE: take note of any other location specific information - it will be used for an article at the top of this listings page)
    • For a search engine, go through the top 30 results to find the centers; listings sites should be fully explored (results should be no longer than a general search engine)

3) Build the listings page

  • By now you've developed a full city listing: now you just have to build the page! Everybody should be familiar with this task by now, and if not see the examples in the geography listings section on Portal:LASIK. This time around, we want to build it out completely.
    • Fill pages for each center, doctor with all information you've found or can find (search their names on Google even for past lawsuits, news stories, etc.). THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND TIME CONSUMING COMPONENT!
  • If you found any other information that is relevant to the page title (in this case, LASIK Centers in Boston, Massachusetts), add it to the top in an article-esque form.

4) Redirect, reDirect, redirect...

  • Redirect all other possible search terms to the page you've created
    • LASIK Boston, lasik Boston, Lasik boston mass etc... tease out these from your earlier ideas of category intersections (the lists should be identical)

Try to limit your search to centers within 50 miles of the city. This is an arbitrary amount for now, but it is probably a good indicator of viable LASIK sites for a resident. In some cases a center who's address is in another nearby might be a viable listing for the LASIK Centers in Boston page. Perhaps these could be separated out later or that cities listings page linked to from the bottom, but it seems this information is relevant to have on the page.

Specifics

Doctors pages need to have:

  • A picture
  • Full resume (where they work, past work history, where they went to school)
  • Any web results that come up on them (lawsuits, awards, etc.)

Center pages need to have:

  • Logo
  • Specialization of the office (just LASIK, or what)
  • All procedures offered
  • Equipment used (in gallery form with photos and appropriate links)
  • Staff (doctors only)
  • Cost (if listed)
  • Financing offered (and through whom)
  • Contact info and address
  • LASIK portal badge LASIKPortalMember.gif

City listings need to have:

  • All centers listed
  • Logos, contact info
  • Equipment used
  • Doctors
  • Cost and financing options

A Note on Big Cities
There are some exceptions to this procedure that may come up. For example, we've already built a page for LASIK Centers in Manhattan and this will be a sub-page of the LASIK Centers in New York, New York page. We'll have to decide this breakdown later, but for now if you encounter a big city listing that needs separation just include all relevant listings in the results to be culled in the next round.

Examples

We will be going back through these to fully perfect them, but these are good examples of the framework we're talking about here (thanks everybody for their work so far!). Use these as a framework for the page and to conceptualize the task.

LASIK Centers in Portland, Oregon
LASIK Centers in Manhattan
LASIK Centers in Dallas, Texas

Done When

These 15 cities have full listings pages and all listings are full (doctors pages and center pages (domain or not)).

City List

Add to center tally as you work. Please strike when done.

LASIK Centers in Phoenix, Arizona (1 center, 6/9 doctors)
LASIK Centers in San Jose, California (8 centers, 21/21 doctors (more pictures, in-links needed, 30% aren't full enough in description))
LASIK Centers in Detroit, Michigan (0 centers)
LASIK Centers in Indianapolis, Indiana (6 centers, 6/6 doctors)
LASIK Centers in Jacksonville, Florida (4 centers, 0/5 doctors)
LASIK Centers in Columbus, Ohio (6 centers, 10/10 doctors)
LASIK Centers in Austin, Texas (7 centers, 20/20 doctors (55% need more info, 10% need pictures))
LASIK Centers in Memphis, Tennessee (4 centers, 19/23 doctors (more pictures needed))
LASIK Centers in Baltimore, Maryland (8 centers, 22/26 doctors (10% need pictures, 40% need more info.))
LASIK Centers in Fort Worth, Texas (4 centers, 7/7 doctors)
LASIK Centers in Charlotte, North Carolina (7 centers, 12/12 doctors)
LASIK Centers in El Paso, Texas (3 centers, 4/4 doctors)
LASIK Centers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (8 centers, 17/17 doctors)
LASIK Centers in Seattle, Washington (13 centers, 35/35 doctors (30% aren't full enough in description))

Resource Estimate

  • 3 people, 5 days each

Evaluation

  • Evaluator: ChrisBabson
    • Aug. 16-30: Out of the 15 cities assigned, two were built out near completion, three more were semi-populated, and the rest only have the general listing framework. Given how much time we allocated for this, I think we were all planning on getting much more done. Since this task was not completed this period, we're going to re-include it in the next period's tasks. Thanks to the team for the good work done so far, but I think we can all agree we need to be more efficient at this in the next round!
    • Sept. 1-15: Progress has still been much slower than expected, so this task has been pushed to the next round of work. The quote for this period was that 10 pages could be completed, but only 3 are near this level and the rest are barely worked on. Let's work hard this period to determine more accurate estimates for how long a city listing takes so we can adjust the work load accordingly to achieve our goals.
    • Sept. 15-30: We got to about 95% done. Only 4 pages had any remaining red links. I'll have to come back through and clean some of this up, but the work is good overall. Congratulations to everyone for getting through this push even though it took us much longer than expected.

Discussion

Notes

  • Images on listings pages: need to redirect to the center page
  • Internal linking on doctors pages: link to all citations with a potential url (Fort Worth is a good example of this)
  • Equipment: make sure the equipment you use links to the correct equipment page in the system. A lot of these examples include links to incorrect equipment names when there is already a page in existence under the correct name. Check Portal:LASIK/Equipment to verify this. If you don't see the equipment name there, then it should be added and a description created.
    • Is there is a similar sort of index page where one can refer to services offered and all the varied spellings/ terms used? FatimaRaja 07:16, 27 September 2007 (PDT)
    • Not that I'm aware of, but each center should list all of the services they provide. We have pages on most (if not all) of these in our system since they are of some relevance, although they have yet to be organized into one services page since this was outside the scope of LASIK. A great idea though if any one wants to take it on...Portal:LASIK/Related Services...ChrisBabson 11:17, 27 September 2007 (PDT)

Estimates

Let's try to come up with some better estimates for how long this takes over this work period. It would be preferable to complete the projected task rather than push it to the next period, so let's be realistic while still pushing ourselves, no?
