BriteCloth.com: Tie Dye Clothing for Adults, Children and Infants

Description

Or, how a casual hobby turned into a business

The first time I ever tie-dyed a shirt I used rubber bands, marbles, Rit dye and my mom's washing machine. The shirt was a single color that faded with every washing. Years later, after moving to a house with a basement laundry room I decided to explore this craft again. I purchased a kit at K-Mart that included three small packets of dye, some fixative and a small book. I sent requests for catalogs and other information to a handful of the companies that were listed at the back of the book and ordered some more supplies, purchased some cheap t-shirts and began experimenting.

The first ones I did were pale with a lot of white. The red was too pinkish and the green too yellow. I kept a few for myself and gave the rest away as gifts. With practice I learned how much dye needed to be used for the effects I wanted and I picked dye colors that I was happier with. I also increased the amount of powered dye I used. Eventually I was producing stuff that even I was impressed with.

I often invited friends over to dye with me and we'd take over the house a couple times a year while my husband tried hard to stay out of our way. But for years I was still just making things for my family and friends. In late 2000 I was folding my latest batch of holiday gifts when someone who was visiting from California asked me where I got my really cool tie-dye. She was very surprised to learn that I made them and immediately bought two. I think that was my first real sale.
