Briard Information
The Briard is an ancient French Sheep Herding dog. The origins of this wonderful dog can be traced back in history to at least the time of Charlemagne - 768 AD. Much of the Briard's remarkable character and structure is a result of this dog's original vocation.
The Briard is not a dog for everyone!! They are very intelligent, strong willed, large/powerful dogs, and have a coat that requires regular maintenance. Owners of a Briard have to be committed to the dog. Brushing during the dog's adolescence may require an hour a day and sometimes more. An Adult dog, under normal circumstances, will need a grooming session of at least one or two hours/week. Because of the dogs size, intelligence, and strong will, it is essential that the owner of a Briard take responsibility for having the dog trained. Basic obedience training is a must. Because of the Briard's protective nature (stemming from the ancient responsibility of guarding the flock from human and animal poachers) extreme efforts must be taken to socialize this breed, to both people and other animals.
Generally, the Briard is not well suited for the causal dog owner. A true commitment of the potential owner to the dog is essential; and prior dog ownership and knowledge is very helpful.
