My journey from sickness to healing began in 1993 when I was only 33. Most people I knew my age were busy with friends and family, summer vacations and holiday parties, but I was busy fighting the battle of a lifetime. That battle was breast cancer.
My healing process began with a lumpectomy and the painful but necessary treatment process that comes with it, followed by a double mastectomy. But the pain from this life-changing illness is not what I remember most; it’s the life-changing inner strength and peace I discovered along the way that comes to mind when I think about my battle with cancer. I, like most people who face and beat this terrible illness, am reminded daily of my victory, but I alone was the one that had to look in the mirror every day and make peace with what I now see and feel inside. It is my mission to pass this strength onto the next person that needs help and hope with Breast Cancer…the only way I know how.
During my first stay in the hospital I was given what appeared to be a hand sewn a pillow when I was discharged. Little did I know that this pillow would become my mental and therapeutic comfort. My arm was so sore from the lymph node surgery that I couldn't lift it, yet I didn't like to hold my arm against my breast incision. The elevation of the pillow made my arm feel better and I was able to lie and sit down more comfortably. That pillow went with me everywhere…and so a new vision began.
