A labyrinth is an ancient winding path used for meditation and prayer. Labyrinths are found in many cultures, some dating back 3000 years. The use of labyrinths was incorporated into early Christian practice. The first known Christian labyrinth dates to 324 A.D., when a labyrinth was installed in the floor of the Basilica of St. Reparatus, Al-Asnamin now Algiers. Perhaps the most famous labyrinth is found at the Cathedral in Chartres. It was installed around 1220 A.D.
