An Extended Ramble
In my business life, I run a virtual library, lii.org. I'm active in my association, as they say; I'm currently on the ALA Web Advisory Committee -- a handful, if you know anything about ALA and its recent misadventures in Web redesign -- and I chair the Intellectual Freedom Committee for the California Library Association.
My major interests are my immediate family -- my partner Sandy (a minister in the United Church of Christ), and our two cats, Dot and Emma. (If you remember Darcy, the immense black-and-white cat who was immortalized in an early Internet book, Cats and the Internet, he died in 1994 at the age of 18, after a brief illness. That cat was better-traveled than most people I know.)
I grew up in San Francisco (Sunnyside Elementary, Aptos Junior High, and McAteer High), which was a fun place to be a child. I had the typical mediocre public education and then spent two years at Mills College. After that, I took two years off to work at San Francisco Juvenile Court and do various political activism. I then got a scholarship to Barnard College, left my job, packed up and moved across country, only to be told in August of 1977 that at the last minute they didn't really have the money for a scholarship. (First major life lesson: get it in writing.) Two days later they called me back and restored the offer. Whew. Anyway, I finished the next two years of college in four years, absorbed in local politics through the Broadway Democrats (I learned how to "stuff" brochures in an entire apartment building in twenty minutes). I served one-and-a-half terms as the Democratic State Committeewoman for the 69th Assembly District (it was the 70th AD when I was first elected). I made great grades when I wanted to and racked up an impressive pile of incompletes... ah, youth.
