BJ Industries was founded in 1991 by Barb Klawitter as a pilot project to fill a need for a safe and comfortable mode of shampooing. Having operated beauty shops in healthcare facilities for over 20 years, Barb was aware of the awkward and precarious positions of stylists and clients while using standard shampoo sinks. Stylists had to endure repeated bending and stretching, and clients were susceptible to disorientation and potential strokes from undue pressure on their necks.
Upon developing and patenting the Adjust-a-Sink system, Barb formed BJ Industries and was encouraged by the Minnesota Board of Health and a major construction firm to make it available to other beauty shops.
Subsequently, the telescoping drain system was applied to kitchen and bath sinks for in-home use as well. Today, Adjust-a-Sink units have been installed in nearly all 50 states and abroad.
