...What is Counselling?
For those unfamiliar with the counselling process, “The overall aim of counselling is to provide an opportunity for the client to work towards living in a more satisfying and resourceful way – the objectives of particular counselling relationships however, will vary according to the client’s needs. Counselling may be concerned with personal development issues; addressing and resolving specific problems; making decisions; coping with crisis; (e.g. stress, bereavement and redundancy), developing personal insight and knowledge; working through feelings of inner conflict or improving relationships with others.”
Crucially, the counsellor’s role is to facilitate the client working through issues in ways which respect their values, personal resources and capacity for self-determination…rather than to tell his client what to do! So Counselling presents a unique opportunity for the client to work through many issues in a way that is safe and provides solutions.
It is important to say that the client’s personal space is always respected, and there is therefore no pressure to explore in any area of the client’s life unless there is a need, felt sense of safety and an open willingness to do so on behalf of the client.
