Ahead of the field in 1998 a group of west-country farmers formed a ‘Co-operation’ company, to fully develop and exploit the potential of Miscanthus. This company was Biomass Industrial Crops Ltd (BICAL) created to supply growers with Miscanthus planting material, develop a wide range of end use markets with provision of full high quality practical skills, contractual support and marketing. BICAL is committed to the expansion of Miscanthus production across the EU, and wider. Ahead of the current expansion of energy cropping for electricity generation, substantial quantities of planting material were required. Consequently, BICAL and its farmer members committed significant investment to rhizome multiplication. As a result BICAL is able to supply high quality rhizome material from known provenance UK stocks and has the potential now to deliver the UK government targets for energy crops by 2010.
Today, BICAL is currently the largest developer and supplier of Miscanthus in Europe, providing a complete service for all aspects of Miscanthus production. We are able to discuss options for individual farm establishment through to complete solutions for large scale energy crop establishment and supply.
Additionally, BICAL currently supports a considerable amount of internal research & development, ranging from continued improvement of on farm technical advice, alternative end uses such as composite manufacture, to models for modern fuel producer groups.
