Bernese Mountain Dogs need training/attention

User:Ann Milligan - I have kept Bernese Mountain Dogs since 1983. The "Berners" are my companions, my friends and my teachers.

Well bred Bernese Mountain Dog puppies can grow into great companion and working dogs. The breed is sensitive, attentive, loyal, beautiful and powerful. Temperaments, health and longevity vary. Visit any breeder's home property before buying a puppy - breed popularity has led to exploitation and increased need for breed rescue. The Bernese Mountain Dog requires training and lots of contact with people. These dogs are big; they shed.; they need daily exercise; they cost a lot of money to purchase and are not cheap to keep. For optimal health include a diet consisting of a good quality kibble, fresh foods, raw bones, time outdoors, walks and plenty of attention. These dogs are often very smart, moderately active and they thrive when given a job to do. Adults should always monitor interactions between children and any pet to ensure safe interactions. Hip & Elbow dysplasia, orthopedic problems, immune system disfunction and other health conditions impact length and quality of life.
