Benedict the Florist was begun on a small scale near Utica, New York by George H. Benedict in 1881. In approximately 1906, his extensive holdings were relocated to Salisbury at Riverview Farms on Pemberton Drive home to our current wholesale division. George's son, Herman G. Benedict, supervised the retail business. The Original retail store was located on Church at Broad Street. The elder Benedict chose Church Street because he wanted to be near the rail lines for easy access to outside markets in his wholesale business.
So extensive was George H. Benedict's wholesale operation, that he was known as the, "Calla Lilly King of the East Coast". Our present owners, George and Glenn Benedict, twin grandsons of the founder upon his retirement in 1947, purchased the company, beginning a new chapter in our company's history.
The next major change to the company was the relocation of the retail operation to new expanded facilities at the corner of College Ave. and Salisbury Blvd. in 1959.Benedict's continues to change and grow as we enter our second century of service to our customers, from one store and just 30,000 sq. feet under glass, we have grown into a family of companies that comprise Benedict the Florist, Inc. today, these include a state of the art wholesale business with over 80,000 square feet under glass, several florist shops, garden centers, landscape and maintenance company and a relatively new and highly successful beach reclamation and natural erosion control, wetland plant division.
