Description

Belize is an idyllic Caribbean destination in the heart of Mayan country, located just below the Yucatan peninsula. Previously known as British Honduras, Belize lies on the East coast of Central America, bordering Mexico to the North, Guatemala to the West and South, and flanked by the Caribbean Sea to the East. At its broadest point, Belize is 68 miles wide and 175 miles long. The cayes (pronounced keys), the offshore atolls, and the Barrier Reef are the main attraction to Belize. The cayes are islands and mangroves that are located between the mainland and the reef. The mangrove cayes provide a protective habitat for many birds, fish, shellfish, and marine organisms. The island cayes and atolls provide superior opportunity for SCUBA diving, snorkeling, fishing, boating, sailing, sailboarding and sea kayaking.

The climate is subtropical, with an annual mean temperature of 79 degrees Fahrenheit. The population of approximately 250,000 people consists of a mixture of Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Spanish, Maya, English, Mennonite, Lebanese, Chinese, and Eastern Indian. All of these different elements have blended successfully, and Belize has gained a widespread reputation for its friendly people. English is the official language of Belize, although Spanish, Creole, Garifuna and Mayan are widely spoken throughout the country. Belizeans broadly welcome tourism and visitors are warmly greeted. Continuing their ancestral customs, residents fish in dugout dories, harvest cassava and weave baskets. The cultural heritage of traditional singing, dancing and drumming will delight you.

The Belize Dollar (BZ$) has a fixed rate of exchange of BZ$2 to US$1. All hotels, resorts, restaurants, and tour operators will accept U.S. currency, traveler's checks, or credit cards.
