Description

Beer Tasting - A basic guide

Although point scoring and competition placing may vary from place to place, beer is usually judged according to appearance, head (foam) retention, aroma, clarity, palate and aftertaste.

Judging at the New Zealand awards was carried out using the American fifty point system, with marks being awarded up to a maximum of fifty. The aim of this competition was to recognize only the top thirty percent of entries, making it one of the tougher competitions in this part of the world.

Once all the samples in each category have been judged, the marks are tallied to arrive at scores for Gold, Silver & Bronze medals. Strictly speaking, it is possible for all entries to win a Gold medal, if each entery reached a score of forty points or more. In this case, the highest scoring entry would win the class.
