Man vs. Woman on Beauty and Style
The average male knows nothing about beauty and style. What is stylish to a typical dude is usually what was cool when he was cool. This why you see thirty year men old walking around in cargo pants, jerseys, frayed backwards caps with “Gamecocks” printed on them, along with socked filled sandals. Men want to believe they are still young and try to keep up this delusion by keeping decades-old fads alive. Sure they might notice that hoop earrings came back or that parachute pants are now really hard to find, but they will never really obsess about it. Beauty to your typical male is unrelated to the term style. The clothes on display in a Victoria’s Secret catalogue are mere props to a man, frilly things that hide the real goods. What is “hot” to a typical man is not always what is currently “in”. This would explain why a vintage Farrah Fawcett poster will cost you a small fortune on Ebay.
Women, on the other hand, have a tendency to place a very strong correlation between the concepts of beauty and style. What is currently in vogue is what is desirable. They will obsess about the latest styles and colors and compete with each other in trying to keep up with the newest clothing trends. If you are not wearing the latest fashion then you are not going to look hot. Ironically, women generally only hold this standard of beauty versus style to each other and not towards members of the opposite sex. You will not see a woman turn around to check out what kind of blue jeans the dude in the white t-shirt happened to be wearing. Most accept men’s inability to dress as a fact of life and leave it alone and even seem to prefer the idea of a slovenly unkempt male.
Metro-Sexuality
Standards of style and attractiveness have been starting to shift slightly. The growing trend of metro-sexuality among the ranks of even the manliest of men is a continuing epidemic that is plaguing the country. Men are starting to preen themselves like proud peacocks hoping to gain attention from the opposite sex. They engage in ritualistic “manscaping” and don the latest threads in hopes to look more attractive. Male makeup has become all the rage in countries such as South Korea, where looking youthful and attractive has become the status quo for men as well as women. While the concept of the male “dandy fop” has been around since the late 16th century, it was usually practiced within the highest spheres of society. Today’s male preening trend has reached further down the caste system, affecting the middle and, to an extent, the lower classes.
While some men acquiesce to dressing fashionably due to a persistence of a mate who might watch too much Bravo, others have simply adopted the new lifestyle on their own. It is unknown if the era of metro-sexuality is just a trend that will go away once women realize that they really do not want their men to dress better than they do, or if it will become a permanent fixture in our society. Perhaps it will slowly die out when both parties realize how much time is wasted each morning, fighting for space in front of the bathroom mirror.
