BCIS -

Description

The Society has been active in the development of guidelines and making recommendations on various aspects of the practice of interventional cardiology and in supporting research. It has also served as a useful forum for advice to the Medical Devices Agency.

The British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS) held its first meeting at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London on the 5th February 1988 and formed its constitution and elected its Officers. Its purpose was to establish regular meetings for those interested in interventional vascular procedures, and at that time coronary angioplasty was still in its relative infancy in the United Kingdom, with a national total of just over 5,000 procedures being undertaken that year. The Society has audited interventional activity in the UK each year since then, and these are available elsewhere on this web site.

At present BCIS has an active membership of over 500 interventional cardiologists, radiologists, nurses, radiographers, physiological measurement technicians and those working in industry. The Society holds two scientific meetings each year, an autumn one at various locations around the UK and a February meeting in London entitled 'Advanced Angioplasty'.
