About Bats
Bats are amazing animals. The only true flying mammals in the world, they have been around for millions of years. Most bats eat either fruit or insects, although the vampire bats of Central and South America prefer a slightly more sinister diet...
All of the UK's bats are insectivores, munching their way through a diet of midges, moths and mosquitoes, eating up to three thousand insects in a night. This means that they have to hibernate over the winter months because of the shortage of food.
The UK is home to seventeen species of bat, from the tiny pipistrelle, which measures just 4cm from head to toe, to the greater mouse-eared bat, which was until recently considered extinct in this country. British bats are now protected by law because their numbers have decreased so dramatically over the past decades.
