- In 2003, a bunch of Berkeley graduate students got tired of having to do paper-based accounting of their shared expenditures. This gave rise to a commandline script (a small but powerful computer program) that would take as input their monthly expenditures and would output a way to settle accounts between them in the most concise way. Some iterations later, a web-based system began to take form that would provide for a more friendly interface for uploading and managing shared expenditures.
