Kathy Faber was born and raised in Beavercreek, OH and graduated from the Arizona State University Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Telecommunications. Her work experience includes years as a Videographer and Producer of educational videos for schools. But it is her personal experience that motivated the creation of this video company…
Kathy's first exposure to American Sign Language was in elementary school. Her younger sister Elizabeth, (who has Downs Syndrome), was presented with ASL instruction in order to help her communicate. Kathy, Liz and their parents tried to learn ASL through the use of crude drawings & graphics. The family had difficulty deciphering many of the signs and was unable to figure out a lot of the diagrams, arrows, etc. It was a frustrating and unproductive experience.
According to Dr. Marilyn Daniels, a professor of Speech Communication at Pennsylvania State University, "The motor areas of the body mature sooner than the mouth and other language articulators... which means it is easier for children to learn and remember signs than it is for them to acquire fluency in either spoken or written language." -- May 2000 issue of Magazine of the World Federation of the Deaf. Signing is an especially useful communication tool with Downs children and adults because many have difficulty speaking, or speaking clearly, due to oversized tongues which is a classic Downs characteristic.
