The Assiniboia West Recreation Association operates a major hockey tournament for minor hockey and has been proud to do so for the past 34 years.
Thirty-four years ago the tournament was called "Crestview Tournament of Champions". The tournament hosted all the even age categories. Carl Wullum, Fred Olinyk, Bill Wintrop, Peter Thompson, and Ron Cooke are just a few volunteers who founded this hockey tournament. The other tournament was called "Heritage Victoria Blue Skate" and hosted the odd age categories. The two tournaments amalgamated into Assiniboia West “Tournament of Champions” eight years ago.
The "Tournament of Champions" is the largest hockey tournament in Western Canada. We have anywhere from 150 to 160 teams playing in 20 age and skill categories. The tournament is run out of 5 arenas in Winnipeg’s St. James area. Teams come from Winnipeg and rural Manitoba. We have approximately 2400 young hockey players ranging in age from 7 to 15 years old. There are approximately 350 games played throughout the entire tournament.
