Description
City officials are hoping to be able to provide free wireless Internet service from any point in the city, or at least in some areas.* The city is now in the process of hiring a consultant to help it figure out logistics and cost.* We aren't bidding to go ahead with the project, City IT Director Derrick Arias said.* "We are simply bidding for a consultant to tell us our options and most importantly put hard numbers together. * This is a project that I've been behind for the past couple of years since WiFi became available in many cities throughout the U.S., Mayor Edelcup said.
The city released its fiscal year 2004-05 audit at its May 18 meeting, which showed it was in 'very good' financial shape.* Still, frugal planning may be in order.* As indicated by our auditor, we are in very good financial shape, City Manager John Szerlag said. * Over the next few months, Szerlag, who started with the city in early March, will continue to familiarize himself with the fiscal year 2004-05 financial numbers and use them to put together the budget for 2006-07 tax year. * Mayor Norman Edelcup said, it is his intention to leave the tax rate alone, at $2.95 per $1,000 of assessed value, to pay for capital improvements. * Hurricane preparedness is under consideration for this year's budget. Szerlag said he hopes to set aside about $10 million for damage to the city's landscaping or infrastructure, which could occur during this year's hurricane season.* Commissioner Lewis Thaler said he agreed with the rough amount of money that Szerlag plans to set aside for hurricane repairs, though he admitted that as of yet he wasn't familiar enough with the numbers to go into much detail. * We had something like $7 million or $8 million set aside in case of a catastrophe last year, Thaler said. "As the city grows, the numbers should grow, so $10 million would be fine to me.
Aventura commissioners railed against the delay in reopening the hurricane-damaged Northeast Library.* The city may supervise reconstruction using county money. * The city and the county library system reached a tentative agreement on Friday to allow Aventura to take over the reconstruction of the library, City Manager Eric Soroka said.* The city will be able to expedite the project as far the bidding process and construction period is concerned, Soroka said.*At a workshop meeting May 18, city commissioners gave library representative Julio Castro heat when they learned it could take three years for the library to reopen. * The Miami-Dade Public Library System would still pay for the reconstruction. Final details should be worked out this week, Soroka said.
