Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty

Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) is a surgical procedure used to treat high degrees of Myopia or nearsightedness and mild Hyperopia or farsightedness. The surgery involves creating a thin corneal flap with a Microkeratome and then making a cut into the corneal stroma. The depth and density of the incision is proportional to the degree of refractive error. The procedure is no longer widely performed, as newer refractive processes offer more predictable results.
