According to the company’s estimates, Autoliv now has approximately 30% of the global market for car occupant restraint products, which include air bags, seat belt devices, night vision systems and improved seating. At the same time, the company has more than 50% share of the market for side airbags, which the invented and introduced in 1994. More than a half of the company’s sales are made in Europe (52%). North America comes second, with 27% of Autoliv’s customers, while Japan and the rest of the world have 9% and 12%, respectively. The company’s most important markets are the United States (20%), Germany (15%), France (13%) and Japan (9%).
Customers
Autoliv supplies car safety equipment to all major car manufacturers and most vehicle brands. Given the fact that the development of a new automotive model lasts several years, Autoliv usually acts as a partner for the car producer. Generally, this means that the company is involved in giving advice on safety-enhancing products, assisting in adaptation and testing of the safety systems. The company’s largest customer group is Ford, with 20% of Autoliv’s revenues, followed by Renault and Nissan, and General Motors. The company’s contracts usually run for the life of the particular car model.
Products
Driven by the desire to substantially cut down the number of traffic accidents, fatalities and injuries, Autoliv produces safety systems that also account for all technological breakthroughs in the industry over the last 20 years. The company makes various components, such as airbags, seat belts, safety electronics, anti-whiplash systems, night-vision systems, steering wheels with airbags, roll-over protection systems, and child seats.
Thanks to a successful growth strategy, Autoliv has become the world’s #1 manufacturer of restraint products in a $17 billion market. Frontal airbags represent 30% of this market, side airbags 24%, seatbelts 28%, while electronics account for 19%. The global steering wheel market alone amounts for more than one billion dollars, without counting the integrated electronics.
