The AusMac Archive
Description
I started the AusMac Archive back in 1995 while I was a student at the University of New South Wales. It was for a while known as "The UNSW Mac Archive" because it was primarily hosted on a server provided by the University. As the archive grew, the website moved from being hosted on an early Windows NT 3.5 server to a Power Macintosh 6200 donated by the then on-campus Macintosh reseller, Logical Solutions.
In my latter years at University, I bought my own server, loaded it with Linux and began serving using both HTTP and FTP from Stuart Parker's then office in the Faculty of Commerce. As Stuart moved on, so the archive did as well. During mid-1999 through a 2600 Australia contact, I moved the now upgraded FTP server to AAPT Business who to this day graciously donate both rack hosting space for the server and bandwidth (it generates ALOT of outbound traffic).
At around this same time I created another archive of software, this time focusing on the area of computer security and privacy software. I named this archive Wiretapped. Given that my spare time interests have shifted to this area, it seemed logical for Wiretapped to begin pulling its weight, and in May, 2000, eSec in Melbourne donated a OneGuard rack-mounted server to host both AusMac and Wiretapped. Later, users of both the AusMac Archive and Wiretapped donated funds to purchase a new server. During 2003, Solutionstap donated funds to purchase yet another server. As of July 2004, all three are still operational, providing information and software to users of The AusMac Archive and Wiretapped.
