Description
The Augusta Players, Inc. has been Augusta's community theatre since 1945. The 2003/2004 season will mark its 59th consecutive year, making it the oldest arts organization in the city and the oldest community theatre in the state of Georgia. The Augusta Players is community theatre in its truest sense and its mission is to provide excellent theatrical productions, presented by directors, designers, producers, and actors from within its own community. Through Mainstage Productions, community outreach, and special programming for youth, the Augusta Players exists to enrich the lives of all citizens of its community.
Our season includes four Mainstage Productions from our adult wing, which are the mainstay and the venue on which our quality is most often judged. Correspondingly, as we continue to emphasize the importance of our children's programming, in addition we present productions from our Youth Theatre and Children's Wing annually. Another division of the Players' youth programming is its Artreach Theatre. Through this program, the Augusta Players presents special weekday matinees of its Mainstage Productions to area students throughout Augusta and its surrounding counties.
The Augusta Players has brought award winning plays to the stage such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and the Glass Menagerie, as well as blockbuster musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Hello Dolly!, The Sound of Music, Little Shop of Horrors, and GYPSY. A goal of the Augusta Players is to ensure the high quality of its programs, offer a vehicle for creative and skilled individuals to express themselves and influence an appreciation of theatre not only with the general populace, but with our student audiences as well.
