- When most people hear the word attorney they automatically think of lawyers. However, an officer in a court of law is only one definition for this term. An attorney is anyone duly appointed by another person to manage the affairs of that person. The person who grants the power of attorney is called the Principal and the person who accepts the responsibility is called the Agent. Generally an attorney or agent will conduct the other person’s business according to limitations as set out in a written document commonly referred to as a "power of attorney". The principal must be of sound mind when the power of attorney is given to someone.
