Developed 9 years ago by Centerpoint principal Jhon Tamayo, this 69-pose sequence is deeply rooted in the essential physical work of iyengar, ashtanga and hatha yoga styles but is practiced at a vinyasa-inspired cadence. The sequence is structured to move students gently into nirvikalpa samadhi, a deeper and fuller state of consciousness. Atmananda Open (intermediate) classes lead participants through a limited number of poses, at a slower pace in order to reinforce proper alignment and technique while building strength, endurance and familiarity with the structure of the sequence. Advanced classes offer students a challenging opportunity to deepen their practice as they are guided through the full sequence in 55 minutes.
Jhon Tamayo is a dynamic yoga teacher who has directed the Atmananda Yoga & Holistic Spa in New York City for six years. Jhon T blends traditions such as Hatha, Iyengar and Ashtanga into his classes, which creatively incorporate a vigorous vinyasa series with stretches, balances, backbends and inversions to open and strengthen the body. From his Iyengar background, Jhon T emphasizes alignment, while his knowledge of Ashtanga brings a strong flow to the class. He also teaches a stretching class that focuses on hip-openers, forward bends and twists.
