In 2006, there were 3,925,400 people living in greater Atlanta. However, the region does not just refer to the city of Atlanta proper, but has grown to include the ten counties overlapping and surrounding the city, including Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale. In the next 20 years, it is estimated that the Atlanta Region will include 10 more outlying counties, resulting in a 65 percent population growth for the region.
