History
Athens was originally settled by the Van Loon brothers, Jan and Albertus about 1686. The brothers' last name may be an indication of the origin of the name Loonenburg, and the Loonenburg Post Office. In addition, the village of Esperanza was established about 1790 by settlers from New England who laid out the community on the outskirts of the village of Athens. Esperanza never fully blossomed as a viable community and was soon absorbed by the expanding village of Athens. (US-T125/NY:A Guide to the Empire State/p591)
