Rab has been a practicing astrologer for over 35 years and an anthropologist for about 20 years. But what really got him going in new directions -- in both fields -- was a sunny afternoon in Edmonton, Alberta when he decided that he'd better try looking for coffee beans from Sumatra.
Rachel had shown up in his office that morning and had asked him to do some geographical astrology for her. Rab had never met Rachel before, but some years earlier he had tried his hand at astro-geography and was quite impressed. The Tet Offensive in Vietnam had occurred right after Mars & Saturn conjoined over the Mekong River, so maybe he'd find something almost as interesting in Rachel's chart.
He did, even if he wasn't enjoying his mug of coffee much. (The usual Mocha Java was beginning to taste pallid, and in those days the choice of bean was a bit slim). However, he feared that what he'd found would be of no use to his new client. It was a mere coincidence that her natal Neptune, and his, was at the zenith over a very small island off the coast of Sumatra; and since no-one goes there, mentioning this would be a tangent. And if he suggested that maybe they were both pearl-divers in a past life, she'd think he was making a pass at her.
