The challenge in meeting this aim is well illustrated by data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) Programme on Cardiovascular Disease, which shows that in 1999, one third of all deaths worldwide (17 million) were due to cardiovascular disease. Moreover, as the developing countries adopt the lifestyle of the established industrialised nations the burden of cardiovascular and metabolic disease is set to increase dramatically. Current WHO estimates predict that by 2010 cardiovascular disease will be their leading cause of death.
