That's me. Hello, and welcome!
I'm a serious amateur photographer and aspiring professional Photographic Assistant, residing in the Pacific Northwest near Portland, Oregon.
AssociatedPixels started as a modest photoblog, and is ever-evolving into a comprehensive gallery of individual works and projects. It is now becoming not just a showcase for my images but, primarily, a place where potential client photographers can see a bit of my work, learn about my background, and find my contact information.
After a career of 20 years as a software QA engineer for Apple Computer in Cupertino, California, I moved to the Portland area and have fallen in love with this place, in every respect.
As a former computer engineer at Apple, I'm obviously expert on the Macintosh, but am also an expert in Photoshop, as well as having extensive experience with Bridge, Lightroom, and Painter, plus some additional familiarity with Aperture and Capture One.
In photography, one quickly learns that it is all about lighting. Ideally, the lighting for an image can come from nature and available light. But, often, lighting has to be controlled (manufactured) in a studio or on-location by artificial means. One fundamental difference between an amateur and a professional photographer is the mastery of lighting control and, in particular, a wider imagination of lighting possibilities as applied to any photographic scene. That understanding has lead me to pursue (since living in Portland) a variety of local classes and other hands-on learning experiences to equip me with the skills and understanding to be a valuable resource that can be counted on during any demanding or creative photo shoot.
Because of my extensive technical background, especially with photo editing software, I may eventually choose to specialize in technical assistance. But that's a long way off. Why? Because there's so much that I want to learn about photography that I feel I'll have my hands full in service of the able and local professionals in the Portland and greater Pacific Northwest area.
Intent on learning everything I can about photography, particularly studio and location lighting, I've decided that a fitting way to realize that ambition is to offer my services as a serious, competent, and skilled photographic assistant. I'm constantly seeking to learn and expand my skills, and I'm a quick study in any scenario. I'm a regular attendee at Newspace Gallery for their varied range of photographic workshops.
I'm available for hire. I'm also an Associate Member (appropriate to Photographic Assistants) of the ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers) Portland Chapter.
