- In 1993, Michael won a “come-from-behind” race against a well-funded establishment Republican. In a very classy campaign, he used parades, door-to-door canvassing, carefully targeted mailings, smartly scripted radio and television ads, bus signs, yard signs, and literature drops to get out the message that he wanted to be a pro-active District Attorney, leading the fight not only against crime but also for crime prevention. In the face of an absolute black-out by the local newspaper, and despite his opponent’s increasingly negative campaign, Michael was relentlessly positive, refusing, as he said in his final radio ad, “to demean the office I seek.” He won handsomely, the first Democrat elected in 40 years, and only the third in the history of the county. Since then he has been re-elected three times, the last two with no opposition.
