Aquarius Operating Systems was founded in 1995, as a technical consultancy and software research entity. The first and primary purpose of the firm was to research and develop the "Aquarius Operating System". Whether the firm got its name from the software or vice-versa, one will never know. To properly understand the rationale behind this OS development, one must remember that era - the PC was just gaining popularity and affordability. The only OS people were aware of at the "desktop" level was MS DOS, with a rather clunky by modern standards GUI in the form of Windows 3.1. IBM and MS had started and then aborted the ill-fated OS/2 operating system and Windows NT 3.51 was a brave thing to use for your file server. Most colleges still ran on various flavors of UNIX. The AOS (OS) was to change all that, by introducing UNIX-like capabilities into a PC-platform, and... rather lofitly for those times, with a sparkling new GUI.

To cut a long story short, the project went on for about 2 years, by which time the Linux OS became strong and added the X windowing system. The stability of that OS and the superiority of the GUI at that time meant that AOS (OS) became instantly obsolete. Of course, in that 2 years, Windows 95 had been born and was already in "OSR 2" (also known as "Windows 97" in some circles).
