- For most of the spring of 2006, a thick, black cloud of smoke was almost a daily sight across the Texas Panhandle. On March 13, 2006, wind gusts as high as 58 mph across the Texas Panhandle fueled up to 14 grass fires that burned hundreds of thousands of acres and caused the evacuations of several communities. Fire officials were finally able to give a temporary all-clear for blazes on March 20, that contributed to the deaths of 12 people, scorched more than 1 million acres of Panhandle territory, destroyed 36 homes, left 10,000 cattle dead, and used $5.5 million in resources fighting the fires across West Texas proving to be the deadliest and most costly fires in Texas history. Other flare-ups continued throughout the panhandle well into April adding to the totals of scorched land and destroyed homes and structures..
