Title

Afghan for Civil Society - Creating a Democratic Alternative

Description

Afghans for Civil Society (ACS) was founded in 1998 by Baltimore businessman Qayum Karzai and Afghans working with the international community–initially to assist the people of Afghanistan in their struggle for freedom. It is a 501 (C)(3) organization, actively involved in economic and institutional development, and returning Afghanistan to a peaceful, productive and democratic society.

To increase public participation in the decision-making process through democracy building, policy development and independent media, ACS has established such programs as an independent, private FM radio station in Kandahar and a Provincial Shura for Uruzgon.

To address immediate — even critical needs, while at the same time instilling community ownership of the reconstruction process and building bridges between Afghans and donors in the West, ACS has developed an income generation project for women, continually assists needy schools with school supplies sent by students in the United States and has planned a vocational training center for young men and women in Uruzgon province.
