Childhood Leukemia - WebHealth

Description

Excerpted from the website description:

Childhood leukemia can be divided into three different forms, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia and non Hodgkins lymphoma. Causes of leukemia are factors that change the genetic makeup of bone marrow. The bone marrow is undergoing a lot of growth during childhood with the normal growth rate. Chronic benzene exposure, such as with the production of detergents, plastic manufacturing, manufacturing of insecticides can be a cause of leukemia. Other causes are diagnostic x rays during the first trimester of pregnancy; there can be genetic problems as Down syndrome has a much higher leukemia rate. Certain viruses can cause leukemia. We know that Epstein barr virus causes Burkitts lymphoma; HTLV is known to cause certain leukemias. There are also myths that state that high voltage power lines supposedly would be causing leukemia, which could never be shown to be the case. The same is true for neon lights that were found to be harmless. However, in the beginning of the production of fluorescent light bulbs there was a problem with leaking x rays that were causing leukemias from x ray exposure. But since these days decades ago strict quality control has eliminated that problem, but the myth lives on.
