Overweight children not only face problems with self-image and appearance, they are also at significant health risk for type 2 diabetes and heart, joint and liver disease. As recently as a generation ago, these diseases were reserved almost exclusively for adults. Because of childhood obesity, this generation of Americans is the first one that will have a shorter life span than their parents. Some say obesity is a matter of diet and exercise; others blame today's food environment. Still, the question remains: What can be done to squelch this epidemic as it takes a greater hold on children throughout the world?.
