The Basic Idea

The ultimate goal of every human is to increase their well being and that of their children. That goal is served by living in a community with an increasingly healthy economy and an increasingly healthy environment. We can talk about all the different ways to accomplish that – but, in the end, it will require more and more individuals, who live in our communities, making choices that lead us in that direction. The future is full of possibilities but we must choose the ones that suit us – so we are suggesting a joint local organizing effort, by all those existing organizations that could benefit, around the question; “What can We do to make Our community a better place to live?”.
Every existing organization - business, social purpose, educational, governmental or political - has an interest in attracting attention to what they offer the community. Every individual has an interest in being aware of what is offered by those organizations and choosing to participate in ways that lead to a healthy local economy and a healthy local environment. The Regional Economic Development Initiative (REDI) is formed for the purpose of allowing existing organizations to cooperate in attracting the attention of an increasing number of individuals to how their choices affect the health of the local economy and local environment – or: “What can We do to make Our community a better place to live”?
REDI is soliciting participation from neighborhood organizations, business owners associations, businesses, social purpose organizations, units of government and political parties to fund projects that lead to increasing participation from individuals. The core project is an on line directory, information organizer and discussion space built around the locality of each individual user (Community Portals). Use of Community Portals by individuals will be a function of how useful the individual finds it and how many individuals and organizations are participating.
Participating organizations can increase use of the portals by bringing it to the attention of their customers, members and constituents and by providing content of value to individuals through the portal.
Participating organizations will benefit as a function of the exposure they receive through the Community Portals and through opportunities to sponsor neighborhood organizing events to be promoted by REDI around the question; “What can We do to make Our community a better place to live”?
REDI is a non-profit membership organization open to participation by neighborhoods and existing organizations of every category. Members will help design the features for and implement Community Portals and determine what other functions REDI can perform to increase community participation. REDI will have a managing Board of Directors as determined by the members and we anticipate a minimal staff devoted to bringing in more and more participation with the maximum possible diversity – consistent with the goal of increasing the health of the local economy and environment. We see this as making connections between existing organizations and REDI will not seek to compete with any existing organization for members or funding.
