- About 040.TV - Eindhoven
- Eindhoven is one of the main cities in the provinces of Norht Brabant in the southern part of The Nettherlans and was probably founded shortly before the year 1232 near the confluence of the rivers Dommel and Gender. Duke Hendrik I of Brabant gave the new settlement city rights and other privileges, amongst which the right to organise a weekly market. The farmers of the surrounding villages had the obligation to sell their products in Eindhoven. It grew to a small city, with a population that existed mainly of farmers and tradesmen. This situation remained unchanged for centuries. However, during the 19th century the industrial revolution brought about some major changes for the sleepy little town. The infrastructure changed : canals, railroads and roads were constructed, and numerous factories arose in and around the centre of town. The most important industrial activities of Eindhoven were focused on textile and tobacco. Especially in the 20th century the town and the neigbouring villages underwent a spectacular change. It was mainly due to the presence of the Philips Electronics Company (which started here as a producer of light bulbs) . During the Second World War Eindhoven suffered heavily from bombardments. Parts of the center were destroyed. After the were new infrastructural projects were realised and the city expanded as never before leaving little remainders of the once quiet past of this city. Then the city rapidly expanded. The company, one of the world's primary electronics makers, is a powerful multinational corporation. In World War II, Eindhoven was taken (Sept., 1944) by Allied troops in a major airborne operation; a simultaneous landing at Arnhem failed. Eindhoven has a technical university. Important monuments and buildings are : the "White Lady" (a Philips building), the DAF-Museum (DAF cars were manufactured in Eindhoven) en the Van Abbe Museum with its impressive collection of modern art (amongst which a Picasso).
