I noticed you were adjusting some of the "child modelling" and pedophile sites to add the flag, but please don't remove the "pedophiliawarning" template.  The purpose for this is to make sure the warning is at the top of the page for anyone who clicks on that to see that if they choose to link to this page they MAY be entering an illegal site.  If we do not warn individuals about this we could inadvertantly be allowing them access to illegal material.  The "User Review" is too far down on the page and may not be visible, that was the purpose of putting the Template at top.  That way if someone just thinks it's "adult Content" or "possible adult content" they will probably not click it if they know it might be illegal.  Many of these sites have names that do not accurately explain what they are i.e. ("littleangels") and someone may think it would be ok.  Although vieing "child model" pictures (which is basically pre-pubescent girls posing sexually in lingerie and other clothing) may not be illegal in some countries and states, it IS ILLEGAL by the federal government and in many countries.  We need to make sure there is a warning at the top of the page to protect people.  Thanks! Woe is Macbook

So the good news is that I got my Macbook back today. The bad news is that it wouldn't boot up. So I called Apple and they ran me through a bunch of tests and finally said they would just give me a new Macbook rather than continue to deal with the refurbished one. While I won't get my Macbook until sometime next week, my PC notebook is coming back from service sometime Thursday, so at least I'll have something until then.

Hi! I would like to request two things from you. 1st, fix the thumbnail of my site (I wanted to edit it myself, but I couldn't, due to that the spam filter didn't allow me to include the "X-X-X" letters without the "-"), and 2nd, rename the X-x-xpda to X-X-XPDA.org (without the "-"). It doesn't look nice when only the 1st "X" is capital.

Thank you, the admin of x-x-xpda.org (without "-" :p)

Hey Simon, I left a note on your talk page. Scott

Domains

Scott-

I was asked by my Manager (the CIO) how you acquire domain names for inclusion in your site. We'd like to know if there is a way for us to include/exclude our sites automatically (ie. if you use a spider) or if you are importing a domain list, and if so which one?

Mike

Hi Mike, the AboutUs:Bot grabs information from several different sources in order to give users a basic page to work with. You can't exclude your site from being listed, but you can keep the AboutUs:Bot from gathering "About Us" information from your site by modifying your robots.txt. Scott

thanks

Scott, thank you very much for the OptOut text on those domains. Sorry I bludgeoned around in there before discovering the proper procedure. Thanks for your help. Bob 05:55, 21 March 2007 (PDT)

Sure thing. Let me know if you ever need help setting up these pages.

TARGUSinfo.com page

Hi Scott - Thanks for your help! Can you use the 2nd logo I posted: TARGUSinfo_blueblack1.jpg ... for the top of the page? The first one looks way too low-res.

Also, is it possible to change the title to TARGUSinfo? This is the correct representation of the company name.

Thanks! Pete

Sure thing, Pete.

caps for names

Hey Scott, sorry about that, Mark Dilley asked me the same thing a while back and i totally spaced on it. will do moving forward. thanks, John

Awesome, thanks so much John.

Scott, did you have any luck getting hold of Gary Evans, the artist at Nike? MartinPfahler

Not yet, I'll likely try today or Monday.

Hey Martin, can you give me some more info on your friend before I contact him? We're looking for someone who can redesign, or skin our site. So they'll need to have strong xhtml and css skills. Is he more of a graphic designer or does he have strong web design skills as well?

Scott, he’s probably not the guy you want. Gary is a pro graphic artist that “self learned” how to use Flash, etc., some time back so he could apply his graphics capabilities to make his own web site – meaning he is not a “Techie”. I am not sure if over the years since I worked with him, he has picked up more coding knowledge. MartinPfahler

Regarding move..

Hello, Thanks for the move but how do i move the pages, plus is it ok if i move pages ? User:Coolbunny

You can move a page by clicking the move tab at the top of the page. If you're moving a page to change the capitalization I'd suggest putting [[FixName]] in the summery field. Also, if you're logged in you can sign your name at the end of your messages by typing ~~~. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.Scott

Is there a way to prevent users from editing those sites that i have edited as basically they belong to myself ? Coolbunny 00:58, 24 March 2007 (PDT)

We consider the wiki pages to belong to the community. While www.microsoft.com may belong to Bill Gates, AboutUs.org/Microsoft.com does not. We keep the wiki pages open and editable by anyone as part of our basic philosophy. Scott

But is there any log or a revert function, so it reverts back to its original state if someone decides to wipe out your site description ? Coolbunny 12:44, 24 March 2007 (PDT)

There is actually. If you click on the history tab at the top of the page, you can see all the changes ever made on that page and who made them. You can easily compare edits and versions of the page on the history page as well. If vandalism occurs someone will catch is as we patrol every edit made on the site. If you find it before we do you can also rollback the changes. Scott

K Will do that , but can there be some captcha or spam prevention also for guests , so bots are not able to post not sure if it exists already or not though Coolbunny 17:37, 24 March 2007 (PDT)

That's not really needed since every edit is patrolled by the community. You can also set your preferences to have an email sent to you whenever a change is made on your page. To do this click preferences, the notification options are on the 'user profile' tab. Scott

Hi Scott

Thank you for writing with your offer to answer questions.

I have edited the page MediaMedley.com since that's our website. I was wondering how to make the search phrase "Media Medley" :::talk:::

IRC hates me

I'm on my home computer and it doesn't like IRC, you know how those dirty PCs can be. But yeah, I was on vacation and as soon as we got off the plane we found out my grandpa was having emergency surgery so we flew back the next morning and here I am. But I will work in the middle of RC instead of the end and I think I might go outside soon or something. Kristina

That's too bad. Is he going to be ok? ScottKeeler | :::talk:::
Yeah, he should be okay. Okay, is there any reason that anytime I type a single quote-apostrophe or backslash thing it would pull up a stupid quick find bar at the bottom and physically not let me type that character? That is aggravating. Um, but yeah he is sleeping a lot and he just got moved out of ICU so that is good. Kristina
I'm glad to hear he's doing better. What did he have to have surgery for? It sounds like you're using Firefox. In which case, pushing the ' key while browsing brings up the find bar. However if your cursor is in the edit section of a page, it shouldn't do that.
He had surgery that removed a large chunk of his small intestine because it had lost blood and oxygen flow and essentially died. Yes to the Firefox, but it does not do this on my laptop - I do not know. I'm going to go frolic outside and call the hospital - see you tomorrow. Kristina
Mmm... breakfast. The best meal 'cause it is unabashedly sugar-friendly. Kristina
Breakfast Wednesday? KristinaWeis
Actually I was talking about us doing the same RC again. I may be up for breakfast, but it would have to be early as we've got plans to go to Thai Lahnna for lunch. sk
Yeah, IRC hates me. Uh, how bout I work from the most recent down? I bet no one else is doing that... KristinaWeis

G'day, Scott. Getting a handle on WIKI. By following a link back from our info-portal buderimvillage.com.au recently, I ended up on aboutus.org, which seems to be a sort of wiki too. I logged back in today using an expired email confirmation & read your greeting. Ta I'm amazed by the amount of stuff people are happy to put up on the Internet for everyone to see & comment on…for all time too! I'm not sure what this is all about nor where the benefits are. Do you have an overview about the concept behind aboutus.org that I can read? Cheers Brent Williamz Buderim, Queensland AUSTRALIA

Hello scott Keeler, I am an Air Force Reservist and while I was activated for Operation Enduring Freedom my web site, earthstarsurvival.com, expired and I am trying to figure out how to get it back. Earth Star Survival is a weekend side business of mine teaching wilderness survival to civilians, (free for Search and Rescue teams). It is my hobby and my passion and identity. I had a student who put the site together for me and I do not know much about web publishing but I do know about teaching these skills. My old site now links to aboutus. Could you please let me know what I can do to regain this site. Thank you for your help in this matter, Bob Collins Ambler, PA 215 654-9164

Adult Content Policy

Scott,

I'd love to talk with you on the phone today, before the meeting, if possible? I'm not sure it's possible b/c I'm in and out of meetings myself, but try me? 312 371 6625.

I see you put walled garden back into the policy. I'm not writing now about the content, but only the process. We can't say "YES" to an "OR" statement. If the walled garden policy that's on the page now works for you, please change your status from "Not Yet" to "YES". The idea is that we can only have one policy when we're done, we can't have an OR in there. So we don't need an OR in there right now. If everyone just edits their own status as often as needed, and people edit the policy so that it works for them, the policy can emerge (great essay, by the way) that 90% of those participating feel good about.

And if this decision simply must be made at the meeting today, my recommendation to everyone is that we continue to work on this consensus poll using whatever policy adopted as our starting point, working from that point towards the 90% YES with the participation number specified on the page. Even if the policy doesn't change at all, I think the process of including people is important. And maybe the policy will significantly change. Which is great for the community, I think, as they see that not only do they give input around policy, but that they actually set policy.

peace, TedErnst

Hey Scott, just thought I'd let you know why I put in the IllegalContent link (it's gone now and I won't put it back). The policy as it was before you mentioned the ToS in your edit summary was clear. No adult content, period. After your change, it was being interpreted in two different ways. People like John, who was no adult content, interpreted it as satisfying their needs. People like Mark, that think a walled garden means that as long as it's behind the wall, anything legal is okay, were interpreting it their way. So I was attempting, in my clumsy way, so show that this policy in no way allows IllegalContent, even though I'm well-aware that this policy doesn't cover that. This policy is about legal content, and we need to be clear on what restrictions we're placing on that. I think Brandon's recent edits are definitely moves in the right direction. I do share Tak's concerns about categorization, however. TedErnst

Trying to address your concerns

Adding the redundant "host or display" is not needed as it's already in the Terms_and_Conditions_of_Use. According to this wording if someone thought a domain name was obscene (foo_x_x_x.com) it could be removed from our system since we "do not host or display." I won't be a yes as long as that language exists in this document, unless it's implicitly stated that wiki pages will not be removed from the system. This policy is how we'll handle wiki pages that link to adult content, not if we'll host or display adult content, there is already a policy on that.

I added "A special exception is made for the domain names themselves. Some websites that we will refer to will have obscene domain names that might normally be excluded from our pages." to the "interpretation" section to try and address your concern about the wording.

This is a living site, our policies can and will change as we learn more. The terms of service will be revised to reflect what we decide. Furthermore, I think the "host or display" language is important to alleviate the concerns of those who don't want to be associated with promoting adult content.

Hi.

You tried to get my attention on IRC and I was sleeping (saying my name won't get my attention in such cases), how can I help you? — Nathan (talk)/ 22:15, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Deleted Related Domains

Hi Scott:

I am trying to include a couple of related links in cyndislist.com and biography.com

The links are BiographyBiography.com and OmniBiography.com which are 100% related and also are first class websites. However I noticed that we were deleted.

Why? Am I breaking some rules?

Regards. Antonio

P.S Thank you in advance for your trouble!!!!

Hi Antonio, I'm not sure why the links were deleted, but it looks like they're up now so they shouldn't be deleted again. Also, your edits aren't as likely to be reverted if you register for an account and are logged-in while making edits. ScottKeeler | :::talk:::

Scott:

Thanks a lot for your message!! You are right. Today both sites Omnibiography.com and BiographyBiography.com are still there... but yesterday they were deleted after submitting them on monday!

One question! Subdomains are elegible to be listed? There are huge and great websites where the subdomains are the most important part of the "portal" in terms of "high quality content". Can we list them? I guess a few months ago you sent me a message regarding subdomains. However I spent a couple of months ill and I could´nt answer to your letter.

Finally. How can I help you in your daily task?

Regards. Antonio

Antonio, thanks for your interest in helping us out. You address two major concerns we're dealing with as staff right now. We're currently working on upgrading our version of MediaWiki which will give us proper support for subdomains. Right now they can be built by hand, but it has its problems. I'd guess we'll be done in two weeks. We're also working on a page that will have all our current projects on it with descriptions and instructions for those that want to help, but the page is also likely a couple weeks off. For now, the best way to help or learn about wiki is to sign up for an account (we prefer people sign up using their real names). Then come join us in our IRC chat room. There's usually always someone there that can help you get started. ScottKeeler | :::talk:::

consensus polling and the word "vote"

Hi Scott, just a note on language. Voting is something everyone knows about. It's a very clear concept, and we tend to extend the language to things that are similar. We vote in elections. We vote in straw polls. We even vote for where we want to have lunch. So far so good. Why am I taking up valuable server space expanding your talk page?  ;-) It's because consensus polling (in my mind - and if it's not this way in practice, I'd ask for your help in fixing it) is not voting.

Most voting systems have clear choices. Yes or No. Bill or Hillary. $100M or $100B. These system generally do not allow you to change your vote. The choices are clear going in (and limited) and you pick one.

With consensus polling, you're encouraged to change your status at any time. It's not final, because the document (or logo) itself isn't final until we're done. I think "status" (or maybe there's a better word) is an important word to use because it implies a point-in-time measurement. It's a temperature-taking.

Anyway, this is probably way too much information, but what can I say. I'm a process geek in many ways. I'd love your collaboration on making consensus polling better and/or clearer. Let me know how this all strikes you, good, bad, or indifferent, okay? Thanks! TedErnst

The Open Directory Project - DMOZ.org

Scott,

I stumbled across a couple of domain pages for DMOZ (The Open Directory Project) and have some concerns.

As a volunteer editor for the ODP, I know that the page dmoz.com is incorrect. The primary URL is dmoz.org, and dmoz.com should redirect to dmoz.org. However, the information on the dmoz.org domain page is about getting a site listed on DMOZ and is, by and large, incorrect.

Ideally, dmoz.org would contain the information from dmoz.com, which I will be happy to flesh out with corrected instructions related to what now appears on dmoz.com, as well as information about becoming an editor, etc.

Is it a problem for me to virtually rewrite dmoz.org? If not, once it's corrected, how does one get dmoz.com to redirect?

Thanks for your help.

Jules | talk 15:51, 18 June 2007 (PDT)

Hey Jules, I redirected Dmoz.com to dmoz.org. You can redirect a page by editing and adding the following code #redirect [[dmoz.org]]. As far editing the dmoz.org page, go right ahead. We'd love the help, especially on a page like the ODP. - Scott Keeler Comment_green.gif

UniversalWikiEditButton

"no one ever agreed that these were good enough"

That is exactly the point. This is how we come to agreement on which ones ARE good enough. Please treat the candidate icons that are currently listed as "efficiently expressed suggestions". We don't have agreement yet ... we aren't even close. It seems quite constructive to point out the failings of the currently listed icons, or to put in a different icon.

The article say that after brainstorming we came to agreement that these are good enough to use now, but we didn't. It's inaccurate, misleading and makes it sound like the decision has already been made. How does basically stating "this is what we've chosen" help the process? - Scott Keeler Comment_green.gif

To me, this is one of the essential features of wiki. I write the document in such a way that it is a finished product that works for me. Then you look at it and tweak it (or radically change it if need be) until it is a finished product that works for you. Now that it is different, I come back and do the same again. We don't get into an edit war because each time we change it we are learning something more about what other folks care about. Add in the other participants and we can quickly converge on a finished product that works for all of the participants.

can we agree?

I'd like to move the language back to a statement rather than a question. It feels to me like we aren't trying to come to agreement on the wording of a question, but rather the wording of a statement about the UniversalWikiEditButton. Of course the current version is provisional and will change dramatically as we move forward. It just means that once we are done we'll have agreed to a statement rather than to a question. I'm going to take a cut at reworking it slightly to revive the statement feel while still acknowledging that we aren't truly done until people agree with it.

Implementation

I'm confused how this will be implemented. Will it be next to every edit link or just once on a page? Will it replace the edit link or be an addition to it? I'm worried the standard 16x16 is too small for it's purpose, will people even notice it? I like a great big button that says EDIT and is the most noticeable thing on a page.

I'm imagining that these implementation details will be left up to each individual who chooses to utilize the icon. I'm with you on making it huge for AboutUs :-) What would it take to get you to yes?

Branding

Hi Scott, can you let me know what happened with this change? change html generated from DomainName.com - AboutUs to <b>DomainName.com - AboutUs Wiki</b> - I am very interested in this and don't understand why it is associated with the <a href="/index.php?title=UpgradePlan&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="UpgradePlan (page does not exist)">UpgradePlan</a>. It is a card that I have had in the que for over a month. Thanks, MarkDilley </p> <dl><dd> <i>This is something I've wanted to do since my first day working here. I don't think anything has changed, I just think it's always been important and now seems like the time to do it. Now that you mention it I'm not sure if it has to be done during the upgrade, but if it only takes 20 seconds to change, we might as well.</i></dd></dl> <dl><dd> <i><b>On why I flopped from WikiPage to Wiki Page to Wiki:</b> My first thought was WikiPage was the right terminology, but then I realized people are extremely unlikely to search the goog for WikiPage (more likely to search for wiki) also WikiPage/Wiki Page will probably be confusing to most people. And we don't have the word wiki on our site very much (almost not at all to our page proportionality - we don't show up anywhere on goog in a search for wiki, despite being one of the top ten wiki's), so I thought we should add a space to Wiki Page in order to get us up higher in the search results. But then my thought was <b>MyDomain.com - AboutUs Wiki</b> seems much clearer for two reasons it makes it about AboutUs (as in The AboutUs Wiki - clarifies brand, helps people know what to expect when they click it) and also some people may not have a WikiPage, but an entire wiki or faux-wiki (e.g. portal) so WikiPage/Wiki Page may not always be accurate. Lastly, I search "MySearchQuery wiki" daily when I want to find a wiki article, and think this would help us turn up in those results. After seeing the results of adding lasik to every page I think we can expect quick results. - <a href="/index.php?title=ScottKeeler&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="ScottKeeler (page does not exist)">Scott Keeler</a> <span class="plainlinks"><a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="//aboutus.com/ScottKeeler"><img src="http://images.aboutus.org/images/1/1a/Comment_green.gif" alt="Comment_green.gif"/></a></span></i></dd></dl> <p> </p><p>I have wanted to do this since our <a href="/TechCrunch.com" title="TechCrunch.com">TechCrunch.com</a> <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/11/14/aboutusorg-a-wiki-about-every-website/">weblog post</a>. But it's not enough. Every one of us has a stake in this process. We all need to air our views. Our opinions will make a difference. We cannot and must not let a handful of people define us. We must speak out and contribute because we are being defined and I for one would like to have a say in how I am being defined. </p><p>Please contribute to this really important project.
