Hello Asad Mahmood Butt and welcome to AboutUs!!!

Please feel warmly welcomed to jump right in and edit any page on the wiki ... after all "It's Your Wiki!" And don't worry ... other AboutUs community members can easily help you untangle any messes that you might accidentally create. We love to help new members of the community :-) After all, it wasn't so long ago when we were the ones bumbling around in a wiki for the first time :-)

Welcome

Great to see you this morning, please check out the help -- Ray King

That edit

As far as that edit, it looks like a mess. Something to study and try and figure out what is going on. Best, MarkDilley

AdultContent

Hi Asad, I personally think that AdultContent is different than IllegalContent - for that reason I like them to be seperated. I don't want to think of child porn as part of AdultContent because for me it solidly falls in the IllegalContent realm. Does that make sense? Best, MarkDilley

Hi Asad! :-) Thanks for the note and yes, you folks can start patrolling again. I am not sure if BrandonSanders has suggested this or not, but it might be good to look at the contributions of KristinaWeis, Isabel, ScottKeeler and Nathan - to see how they are making certain decisions about what to fix and not fix. I am not saying you should do it like them :-) Just check them out :-) Best, MarkDilley

Visit to Lahore

Hi Asad,

It was great to meet you as well. The hospitality in Lahore was fantastic. I'm looking forward to my next trip :-)

Lasik Thoughts

Hi Asad,

I'm glad to see that you got some help with your questions about what to do next. Your work on the introductions of the doctors is excellent! You are definitely getting close to being ready to send out emails to all the lasik centers in LA.

Also, the email for Lasik providers contains the Lasik tables in wiki text.

When you have an actual email address, select the rendered html (rather than the raw wikitext) and then copy and paste that into a gmail message. It will preserve the formatting and the images. Sending a message via a form is going to be substantially trickier. You'll have to send a text only version of the email.

Warm Regards,
Brandon

Template:LASIK:GoBack

Nathan and I just created a new template to put a link on each doctor's page, back to the LASIK page for their city. Here's an example: Jacqueline D. Griffiths, M.D. I would recommend putting this on each doctor's page. Also, I used Template:TOCright. Do you like the way that looks, with the Table on Contents on the right? If so, feel free to change the other pages, or just use that for the new pages you're creating. peace, TedErnst 11:42, 15 May 2007 (PDT)

Portal Talk:LASIK

I made a new page for anyone working on the LASIK portal to be able to talk about new ideas and on-going work. It would be great if you could write there about the comments already there, and also about your ongoing LASIK portal work. TedErnst

"waiting for others" comment

Asad, I see you've copied your "waiting for others" section to the portal talk page. I don't have a preference where that list lives, but I do recommend that you keep it only in one place, not two. I find it's annoying to have to update the same list in two places, which is why I suggest this. If you actually want it to appear in two places, then I'd recommend tranclusion. Do you know how to do that? If not, ask and I'll show you. :-) TedErnst

I also think that it's better to have it on one page instead of two, but I am certainly interested in knowing something about tranclusion.

Seems like there should be a transclusion page. Maybe you want to hunt for it? Anyway, you know how we use templates? Like this: {{TEMPLATENAME}}? Well, that's transclusion. By default, double curly braces take whatever's on that page, in the Template namespace, and puts it on the other page. You don't have to use the Template namespace, however. You just have to put a : in front of the name, like this {{[[Template::MAINNAMESPACEPAGENAME|:MAINNAMESPACEPAGENAME]]}}. So maybe make a page called AsadWaiting and transclude it on your page, and once that works, transclude it on the portal talk page as well. Clear? TedErnst

where are you keeping responses?

When you get an email back, where are you keeping that info? Also, do the 4 of you have the work broken down by city? I'm just trying to get an idea of the scope of coordination that needs to be happening as each of you are emailing providers. Thanks! TedErnst

DomainPage and/or name of LASIK provider as page name

Asad, I notice you moved all your pages from their domain name names to be the names of the clinic or provider. At first I thought it made a lot of sense to do it that way, because the provider name is way more important than their domain name. Then Mark pointed out that we lose the link to that domain name from the page. See WeLinkYou for a visual of the link. Do you see what I mean? I see a couple of ways forward (I'm sure there are more):

  1. Move the pages back where they were, so that at least there are redirects from the clinic name to the domain name.
  2. Move the pages back and come up with a standard way to highlight the clinic name near the top of the page.
  3. Leave them as they are, with inconsistency and some disagreement about which way is "right."
  4. Start a consensus poll on the issue of naming.

What do you think? TedErnst

skype call

Asad, I would like to have a skype call with you for 15 minutes Thursday morning at 9am your time, okay? I'm scheduling the others for subsequent days. If this doesn't work, we can reschedule. Thanks! TedErnst

Removing thumbnails

Something a bit easier for you would be to just link to RemoveThumbnail when removing thumbnails per AdultContentPolicy. It should save you some typing. Nathan (talk) / 22:55, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

There is also RemoveCategory for the same type of reason. Nathan (talk) / 04:43, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

PageNameBestPractices

I love what you wrote! Could you put yourself down as a participant on that page with a YES or Not Yet, please? Thanks! TedErnst

consensus polls

I think maybe we ought to talk about how consensus polls work. A couple of notes:

  1. the status options are "yes" and "not yet". There is no "no"
  2. you can change you status as often as you need to, as the document evolves
  3. points 1 and 2 taken together mean that as soon as you know you're interested in an issue, which you clearly are in this case given your writing above, you should put your name on the poll with a status of Not Yet. The reason to start with Not Yet is that you haven't made up your mind yet on what's there, or what's there is confusing or incomplete or just plain wrong or whatever. It's only by putting your status as not yet and stating your concerns that the rest of us can listen to those concerns and try to address them, once they've been heard

Make sense? Should we schedule another skype? TedErnst

Walk the Wiki Way

Hi Asad,

Kristina recommends that we use this link TheWikiWay:WhatIsWiki to introduce people to about us when we welcome them. Tanwir Shah

re: LASIK:Letter TextOnlyVersion

Portland office phone seems fine. Are you putting your name or someone in Portland? This makes me wonder if it makes sense for the Lahore office to get a US Skype-In phone number. What do you think? That way you could set it up with a skype voicemail saying it's the AboutUs office, leave a message for Asad, Obed, Tanwir or Wasim and we'll call you back as soon as we can. Thoughts? TedErnst

Enjoy!

Election Portal

Do you think it would be good to include the dates and source with the news articles in the election portal? I think it might be helpful to quickly see when news articles need to be updated. I really like the "About this Website" that you added, but it is somewhat confusing to me since you can't see from the external link what external site is being referenced, maybe "About this news source" or something that is more clear...? What are you thoughts? KristinaWeis | **talk** 12:14, 8 June 2007 (PDT)

Oh my, what you've done on JoeBiden.com looks great!

Rollback

Hi Asad, rollback only goes to the last IP or name. so your wish to rollto (as we call the future feature) doesn't work here [1]. Best, MarkDilley

LASIK response

Hi Asad, I see you received another response. That's great! What did it say? TedErnst

Community Reviews

Hi Asad, I was patrolling when I came across an edit of yours on AlanaRomanov.com. An anonymous user had left a comment "AIDS DISEASE GUARANTEED," criticizing the site and you moved it to community reviews and placed in the correct format. Creating the Community Reviews section was perfect, but we wouldn't really consider that a review. In the future, just delete a review that doesn't provide actual, helpful information. For example, if someone posts a review that says, "SPAMMER! SPAMMER! SPAMMER!" that is not helpful information and should be deleted. However, if someone posts a review like, "This site is a registered spammer" and then they go on with evidence like excerpted text and the spammer's ip, then we want to keep that review. Before keeping the review just ask yourself, "is this helpful?" and if the answer is no, then delete it. Have a good day. Blake Hinckley 13:48, 12 June 2007 (PDT)

Re: Community Reviews

Hi Asad, I take your point. We are in the business of encouraging community -- however, "AIDS DISEASE GUARANTEED" is not a review, it is merely defamation. I think there is a gray area that my earlier post does not acknowledge. If the review is "I have received spam from this website," then I think we want to encourage the user to include more information, but if the review is an anonymous IP posting gobbledygook in all caps, like in AIDs example, we should just delete it. As the Thoughts On Negative Reviews section states, "If a negative review is stated in a non-constructive manner, the best option often is deletion." Thanks for your time and I apologize if my above post did not fully address the issue. Have a great day! Blake Hinckley

Convergence

Hello Asad, could you move your conversation with Blake to NegativeReviews. I think this is a good opportunity to collaborate on taking another step towards clarity on this. Best, MarkDilley

style thing on links from doctor pages

Asad,

Just a style thing. Feel free to disagree with me and leave it the way you have it. The way I see it, the City portals are above the clinics and doctors in a hierarchy tree. The doctors and clinics are sibligs, as it were. So using the go back template to link back to the parent (city portal) from each child (doctor or clinic) makes sense to me. Having a section on the clinic pages to each doctor also makes sense to me, as does having a section on the doctor pages to the clinics. Now, I can also see how the clinic pages are somewhat like parents to the doctors, which is why you're linking at the top "back to Provider Foo". And, I don't think that link is needed, as long as the clinic is linked in the body of the page. Again, as I say, I'm only one person, so feel free to leave it. Or change it.  :-) You know my opinion now. TedErnst
