My real name is Geoff Burling. I've been a part of Wikipedia [1] since October, 2002, and have a user page there. I have a number of other accounts under this name, some of which I have forgotten about. I also have a blog -- http://original-research.blogspot.com. I try to post to it regularly, but life interferes.

So why don't I use my real name for my account on AboutUs.org? Lots of reasons wrapped up, surprisingly enough, in actually embracing my own identity. If you use Google to search on this username, you'll find a great many of my edits & learn who I am. (I've made some under other names.) If you Google under my legal name, you might confuse me with a car dealer in Australia, and other people or places I have nothing to do with.

It's part of an email address that I've had for almost 15 years now -- which is forever in Internet time. There's a history, & a reputation, attached to this name that you don't expect with something like "Par1s Hi1ton's k3l3st lov3r".

Further, when I post as "llywrch" (or "Llywrch"), I am speaking as myself, typos and all. If I post as "Geoff Burling" (or "Geoffrey Burling"), I may be posting at that moment as an employee for a company, & may be saying something I do not 100% agree with. Employers always insist on real names, so I can't give that persona another name.

More details later, I promise.

See user:Llywrch/Essay for some incohate thoughts.

25 September: Would I get into trouble if I point to the list of sites this non-existent category links to? Or will someone simply remove the link to it -- which was my intent -- & handle the webpages appropriately?
