Descended from the Clarks and Higginbothams of Ohio and Minnesota, Vin Suprynowicz was born in Connecticut near the beginning of the Post-War Baby Boom. He graduated Eaglebrook School in 1965 and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. in 1972 with a degree in Art and a concentration in Filmmaking, working his way through high school and college as a disc jockey, playwright, short-order cook, motel night clerk ("The Lord Cromwell Motor Inn"), and member of the relentlessly unsuccessful rock & roll band "The Four Shadowings of Doom."

His senior thesis, a half-hour film titled The Ruthyn Curse, was based on the works of J. Sheriden LeFanu, "a derivative and deeply troubled Irish horror writer, popular in his time, who eventually frightened himself to death and is now held in almost universal disregard."

Quickly ascertaining there weren't going to be many full-time postings for screenplay writers in New England, and finding no publishers for his first two novels (to the immense and long-standing relief of readers everywhere), he turned to newspapering, landing a job with the alternative weekly Hartford Advocate, where his duties included driving the delivery truck to New Haven and New London, a route which sometimes involved sleeping in the truck.
