Many companies have been employing social media as a part of their marketing strategy, and for good reason.  Now that it impacts SEO, companies that don't take social media seriously are really going to be left behind.

Who links to you on Twitter matters. Google and Bing say they look at '''the author's authority or quality''' when evaluating links on Twitter. You probably know already that it's more beneficial if influential tweeple (people on Twitter) tweet about you because they will reach a wider audience, and the same is now important for the SEO value of Twitter.
 
 
 
The idea of author quality is much like [[/Learn/What-PageRank-Means-for-Your-Website|PageRank]].  The idea is that a link from 100 different PageRank 0 pages might provide the same SEO value as one link from a page with a good amount of PageRank.  A tweet from a respected and high profile person with a lot of followers will be worth more -- SEO and otherwise -- than 100 tweets from spam-y bot accounts.
 
 
 
Signals that can tell people and search engines if an account is authoritative or real:
 
 
 
*Presence of an avatar or portrait
 
*Has the account been verified? Did the person confirm their email address? (People can't see this, but Twitter would have this info and the search engines may be able to get it.)
 
*More followers, and quality ones
 
*Better if profile URL doesn't match domain being tweeted?
 
*Avoid #s in your Twitter handle (Many spam accounts on Twitter have usernames like Name8765)
 
*Filled in bio
 
*Engagement -- accounts that never @ people certainly seem spam-y to me.
 
*Listed on more lists

Something to keep in mind is that using bots or cheap labor to create a ton of Twitter accounts and tweet links to your site will be a spam-y waste of time and money.  If you notice a spam-y Twitter account, click "report [username] for spam".

What don't we know for sure?
 
* How long will the SEO boost from Twitter links last? It's believe that the SEO boost from a Twitter link will decrease or go away over time. The Twitter SEO boost from links in tweets is likely less permanent or constant like a normal link from a website.
 
* If you're going to get x amount of tweets linking to a given page, is it better if they're retweets with the same content or uniquely written tweets?
 
Time will tell as we have more long-term data from experiments like the ones above.
